TECHNOLOGY VS TEACHERS
TECHNOLOGY VS TEACHERS
Can the advancement in technology replace teachers?
In today’s world, we have reached greater heights in technology development. Technology has made the world shrink. Everyone holds one or the other form of technology that could give them a wide knowledge. In ancient days we are used to getting news through papers or radios, then through television and now through smartphones. We used to visit a doctor, in case of medical need, but now we are able to get online doctoral advice. Groceries, vegetables, electronic goods, toys, dresses, medicines, and more are available online. So that we need not go in person to buy those. Once we order them, we will get them delivered.
Technology has laid its feet in every field. When talking about education, technology is playing a vital role in it.
Historical education made the pupil go to the teacher’s house, stay there and do all the works for the teacher as fees, and learn the skills from the teacher. In those days education was only meant for the King family and Brahmins. Sometimes the Kings appointed a teacher, to train his children personally. Later the condition changed and all the people were given opportunities to learn. Initially, the writing practice was given in sand, later on, Olaichuvadi, then slates.
As an advancement, the teachers of various fields were brought under one roof and the place was named as a school. The traditional way of teaching was set as chalk and board method. A teacher would stand in front of the board, explain the lesson to the students, by noting important points and terms on the blackboard.
Later smartboards emerged, through which students started learning lessons visually. This enabled effective learning and the outcome was really appreciable. Students loved to watch and learn. This was believed to be one of the easiest ways of teaching.
Apart from this, all the answers to our doubts and questions are now available online. People are able to access every source of knowledge from wherever they are. If you want to know something about the solar system, you directly opt for googling. This shows the advancement of the learning process. We aren’t ready to rely on someone to clarify our doubts.
I remember running behind my teacher, with a notebook to get my doubt clarified. She would yell at me before helping me out. But the kids these days are more advanced. If there is a doubt they take up the mobile or laptop to google the answers. I wonder, whether to appreciate or worry about this technology development. Because, it creates a sort of fear in me, that it might lead children in the wrong way. We, after clarifying our doubts with that yelling, will never forget the concept. Because, if we ask again, we might get beatings too. But the ones who rely on google may not be serious with what they learn, because they can google any number of times they want. Technology has reduced the role of a teacher in a student’s education.
Coming to the question: Can the advancement in technology replace teachers?
The answer will obviously be no. Because, not only technology, nothing in this world can replace the role of a teacher. The reasons why teachers are irreplaceable are:
A teacher stands as a role model along with knowledge sharing. A teacher teaching with love and passion will definitely live as an example for the students on how to face society and struggles in life. The knowledge shared by a teacher will be out of the experience and will stand in a student’s heart forever.
A teacher will be an external parent, while technology can’t. A student spends a lot of time with a teacher than with parents. So the teacher automatically takes up the responsibility of not only teaching but also guiding them in the right path and regulating their behaviors.
When students struggle with psychological problems, the teacher turns into a counselor, helping them to get out of the problem.
One of the most important roles of a teacher is being a resource. A teacher will be an ocean of knowledge, where the students acquire their desired information.
A teacher is the sole person who makes the environment learner-friendly. A teacher makes the surrounding in such a way that will enable the students to learn actively.
Students are very much advanced. They are able to think a lot and ask more questions. Only a teacher can lead them to think in the right way.
Thus a teacher can never be replaced. But think about the current situation. We aren’t able to step out of our houses due to this pandemic. But still, the thirst of students to learn hasn’t decreased. To help them continue the learning process, schools have opted for online classes. This is another step of technology in education. Through various technical applications, teachers are able to meet the requirements of students and teach them effectively.
Thus précising, technology nor teachers can function individually in the education process. Only if they join hands together, the process is fulfilled.
