Engineering studies can provide doorways to a variety of employment. When compared to other professional options, engineering graduates have a plethora of possibilities for selecting their sort of work and type of employment. Engineers also have the option of working for the government. Obtaining a government job is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for everyone, especially Indians. Aside from regular graduates and postgraduates, a large number of Engineers seek government employment.
Government employments are a blessing since they provide a decent pay structure, stable employment, and other profitable chances. Getting a Government job isn’t as simple as it seems. The competition is fierce, and the conversion rates are low.
To get a Government job one must have skills in Mathematics, English, Reasoning, General Knowledge and Computer Knowledge.
Aside from academic knowledge, one needs have the motivation and mindset to fulfill the goal. When an Engineer wishes to work in the core area of his or her studies in the government sector, it is best to take the Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) examination. PSUs normally recruit using GATE exam scores; however, there are some other profiles where GATE scores are not used.
Public Sector Undertakings take place in a variety of industries, including telecommunications, banking, service, and etc. Following a BTech (Mechanical/ Civil/ Electrical/ Electronics), graduates can apply for government positions at the following companies:

- Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited (BHEL)
- Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL)
- Engineers India Limited (EIL)
- Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL)
- Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL)
- Oil India Limited (OIL)
- Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC)
- Steel Authority of India (SAIL)
- Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL)
- Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL)
UPSC Civil Services Exam – This exam provides access to services such as Indian Police Services (IPS), Indian Administrative Services (IAS), Indian Revenue Services (IRS), Indian Foreign Services (IFS), and others. The exam is accessible to any graduate with a maximum age of 32, however, in recent years, a large number of Engineers have been selected. The selection procedure includes three tests: the Prelims Test, the Written Test, and the Personality Test. Selected applicants are paid fairly, and they are required to provide extensive social services.
UPSC Indian Engineering Services Exam – Any Engineer having an engineering degree from a recognized institute is eligible to apply for this position. The prelims stage, written tests (only Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Electronics papers), and personality tests are used to choose candidates for the position.
UPSC Forest Services – Any Engineer with any stream is eligible to take the test. The selection system includes the Prelims stage, where the cut off for the IFS is determined by the UPSC CSE Prelims test, the Written and Personality tests.
State Public Service Commission (Civil Service Exam) – An Engineer must have a bachelor’s degree in any field from a recognized university in order to apply for this position. The method for selection and the remuneration for this varies by state.
RBI Grade B Graduates from any stream from a recognised institute are eligible to take the Reserve Bank of India Grade B examinations. The exam is divided into three phases: the preliminary stage, the written exam, and the personality test.
Senior Section Engineer/ Junior Engineer in Indian Railways Board – An Engineer with a maximum age of 34 years old is eligible to apply for this position. Tier 1, 2, and 3 examinations are used in the selection process, and they include computer-based, technical, and interview assessments.
Indian Army (Technical Graduate Course) -Vacancies for the Indian army depends on the various disciplines and the cut off percentage in engineering is set by the Ministry of Defence. A specific degree of physical fitness is required, and the final stage includes an interview procedure.
Scientific/Technical Assistant – Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The selection process is done through an OMR based written exam of two papers – Computer Science and General Knowledge and Aptitude.
DRDO hires highly trained and skilled scientists and engineers who make up the Group ‘A’ (Class I Gazette) Service known as the Defense Research and Development Service (DRDS).
Engineers can also work at government colleges as lecturers. They may share their knowledge and contribute to the country’s future development. Lecturers can also participate in government-sponsored research. To work as a lecturer at government colleges, graduates must pass admission tests.
As a result, the demand for engineers has skyrocketed, allowing government positions to keep up with the ever-changing technologies. The government sector has enhanced its pay package and is providing several advantages to its employees. As a result, it is quickly becoming a prominent career option for engineers.
