ASCE Indian Region Student Conference & Concrete Canoe Race at BIT
How we teach matters as much as what we teach. At BIT, we’re finding ways to facilitate these opportunities.
While classroom teaching remains a crucial part of the collegiate experience and of preparation for future endeavours, it is clear that hands-on, “real world” projects provide students with meaningful opportunities to discover their passion and build the skills to support it. They build on what they’re learning in the classroom, have a tangible impact in the world and are prompted to think about where their experiences and classroom learning together might lead in their careers.
That is the essence of experiential learning, which we provide at BIT.
Giving students a chance to test their abilities before leaving our institute.
As one of the stepping stone in experiential learning for students, our Bannari Amman Institute Technology in association with the American Society for Civil Engineers has organised the ASCE Indian Region Student Conference 2020 at BIT campus from 3rd March to 6th March 2020.
ASCE
The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is a tax-exempt professional body founded in 1852 to represent members of the civil engineering profession worldwide. It represents more than 1,50,000 members of the civil engineering profession in 177 countries.
Through the expertise of its active membership, ASCE is a leading provider of technical and professional conferences and continuing education, the world’s largest publisher of civil engineering content, and an authoritative source for codes and standards that protect the public.
ASCE-IRSC Conference 2020
The professionals of ASCE with the management of BIT organised the conference for the Indian region students to exhibit their skills.
The conference was planned to create a platform for the engineering students and professionals for sharing their professional and research experience through oral and poster presentation of the technical papers on various themes.
The inauguration of the conference held on March 3rd, 2020 at Vedhanayagam auditorium, BIT.
The Concrete Canoe Race
The ASCE- IRSC conference entailed by a Concrete Canoe Race on 5th March 2020 held at a Fish pond near Sathumugai, Sahtyamangalam.
20 teams of students from Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, Mukesh Patel School of Technology Management & Engineering, Mumbai, Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore, Saint Gits College of Engineering, Kerala & Kongu Engineering College, Erode presented their canoes.
The event challenged the students’ knowledge, creativity and stamina while showcasing the versatility and durability of concrete as a building material.
The race conducted in order to choose the proficient teams for the International Concrete Canoe competition which will be organised by the ASCE in the USA. The students’ canoe were ranked according to the factors like dynamic, pressure, dropping capacity, travelling capacity and weight of the canoe.
BIT conceptualized the competition in resemblance to the ASCE Concrete Canoe competition in the USA. The competition was a unique opportunity for the students of Civil, Architecture and Ocean Engineering.
The ASCE Concrete Canoe Competition
The ASCE concrete canoe competition is an exciting opportunity for students to apply classroom concepts to a hands-on project and to form lasting friendships with industry experts.
The Concrete Canoe Competition is designed to provide civil engineering students with an opportunity to gain hands-on, practical experience and leadership skills by working with concrete mix designs and project management.
Students’ Canoe
For the race, The teams participated with the concrete canoes built by their own, which remains sturdy and light in water. The process of making the canoe on their own provides the students with a practical application of the engineering principles they learned in class and challenging the student’s knowledge, creativity and stamina while showcasing the versatility and durability of concrete as a building material. It demands meticulous planning, studying of various elements and innovation.
The management of BIT and the professional members of the ASCE graced the conference and the canoe race. The valedictory function took place on 06th March 2020 at Vedhanayagam Auditorium, BIT.
BITians at ASCE Concrete Canoe Competition 2019
Last year, In 2019 our Bannari Amman students participated in the ASCE National Concrete Canoe Competition was hosted by the Florida Institute of Technology, Melbourne, FL, the USA on June 7-9, 2019.
Our Bannari Amman Institute of Technology has made concrete canoe history, marking the first time in NCCC history that a team from India competed. BIT sent a large student contingent, ready to learn and compete.
After a year of detailed planning and dedicated execution by each member of the BIT`ians team YALIVIL with 40 aspiring Civil Engineering undergrads, passionate about innovation and advancement in the evergreen field of engineering, participated in the ASCE national level Concrete Canoe competition as a first team to represent the India section at Florida Institute of Technology, Melbourne, FL, USA.
Our innovation had won first prize in the Indian Region Concrete Canoe Competition conducted by the American Society of Civil Engineers Student Conference held at Mukesh Patel School of Engineering, Technology and Management, NMIMS University Mumbai.
