The glue was first tested on pig figures, where a gel-like matter forms a seal throughout tissue openings in just 20 seconds after being stimulated through UV light, which is reflected at an opening using a handheld torch. (1)
Doctors could soon start sealing wounds using lasers than stitches:
The gel is made up of water, gelatin and a mix of chemicals that are inserted into the injured tissue. Once stimulated, it quickly hardens and forms a waterproof seal, holding blood-like liquid flowing through. Since the glue is active on wet tissues too, it reduces the need for staples or stitches for closing wounds.
With a UV flashlight or an optical fiber, this substance can possibly be used for fully stitchless sealing, which performs it a promising bio-glue for practice in surgery and emergency clotting.
The glue successfully repaired the pig’s hearts without the need for stitches in a further experiment. The pigs also made a complete cure with no irregularities or side effects. Moreover, the gel is able to resist up to 290mmHg blood pressure which is far more than what maximum doctors normally deal with and far away what other glues can handle. (2)
