You’re Only As Good As Your Last Success! BIT Whizz Kids Success Story!!
Our students have indeed made us proud once again in an international forum. It was an excellent opportunity and our BITians worked very hard to ‘Reach Out, Reach High, and Reach Beyond’.
The Bannari Amman Institute of Technology students from the Department of Civil Engineering and Sustainable Civil Engineering materials laboratory had participated and won 3rd prize in Fibre-reinforced Composite event organized by American Concrete Institute a pioneer in concrete technology research and development around the world.
The winners were awarded a trophy, 250 $ prize money, and representation in ACI official website.
ACI FRP Composite Competition
The ACI Convention is an opportunity to showcase companies, projects, current events, and landmarks, and offers numerous networking events where you can expect to meet with many of the Industry’s top Engineers, Architects, Contractors, Educators, Manufacturers, and Material representatives from around the world.
More than 2,000 engineers, students, contractors, educators, manufacturers, and material representatives from around the world have convened at the Duke Energy Convention Center, Cincinnati, OH, the USA, on October 20-24, 2019, to collaborate on concrete codes, specifications, and practices.
Technical and educational sessions had been provided for the attendees with the latest research, case studies, best practices, and the opportunity to earn Professional Development Hours (PDHs).
The objective of the competition is about to Design, construct, and test a concrete structure reinforced with Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) reinforcement to achieve the lowest cost-load ratio.
Cost is defined as the calculated batch cost for concrete materials and chemical admixtures plus the cost of the FRP used to reinforce the structure; adjusted for forming costs for more complicated geometries and reduced by credits given for implementation of sustainable design concepts. Predict the ultimate load. Predict the load that will result in a piston deflection of 3.5 mm (0.14 in.).
Throughout the convention, ACI held over 300 committee meetings, 40+ technical sessions, an industry trade exhibition, networking events, and more.
All About BITians’ Project
A structural reinforcing bar made from filaments or fibres held in a polymeric resin matrix binder. The FRP Bar can be made from various types of fibres such as Glass (GFRP) or Carbon (CFRP). FRP bars have a surface treatment that facilitates a bond between the finished bar and the structural element into which they are placed.
BITians designed a concrete mix using eco-friendly materials such as fly ash, silica fume and chemical admixtures such as superplasticizers, etc. FRP bars having many advantages like corrosion resistance, weight advantages, high strength, economy, flexibility and greater advantages like durable performance in an aggressive environment.
The mix design calculated by the team members created a good bonding characteristic with the FRP.
The students are planning to invent a new FRP bar using natural fibres and resin matrix which will be a nice start-up idea in our country.
