Fields Medal
Fields Medal
The field award is considered to be one of the highest awards that a mathematician can receive. This is also defined as the Nobel Prize in Mathematics.
The prize is awarded to two , three or four mathematicians under the age of 40 at the International Congress of the International Mathematical Union (IMU), a conference that takes place every four years.
History
The Field’s medal was conceived by the Canadian Mathematical Professor John Charles Field’s, who was secretary of the 1924 International Mathematics Congress. He has donated funds to establish the medals, which were named in his honor.
The first field medal was awarded in 1936 to Finnish mathematician Lars Ahlfors and American mathematician J. Douglas. Its aim is to provide recognition and support to younger mathematical researchers who have made major contributions. In 2014, the Iranian mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani became the first woman to receive a field medal. Medalists get a cash grant of $1500.The most recent group of Field’s medalists received their awards on 1 August 2018 at the Iem held in Rio de Janerio, Brazil. In the 1997 film Gead will Hunting, fictional MIT professor Gerald Lambeau is described as having been awarded a Field’s medal for his work in combinatorial mathematics. Since 1936, 44 mathematicians have received the fields medal.
