Biodiversity
“Biodiversity starts in distant past and it points toward the future”.
“Air, water, soil, energy and biodiversity are the things that keep us alive. We can’t imagine anything more important than this”.
The term Biodiversity refers to the variety of life forms and habitats found in a defined area. It defines as the variety and variability of all animals, plants and micro- organisms and the ecological complexes of which they are a part. In our earth it supports something like 5 to 10 million species of plants and animals which have been the result of 3 billion years of evolution involved mutation, natural selection and recombination. Biodiversity is an umbrella term covering diversity at species, genetic and ecosystem level.
“We are tied to the ocean and when we go back to the Sea, whether it is to sail (or) to watch we are going back from when we came”.
“Nature holds the key towards our future”.
Biodiversity increases from poles to equator. Number of species increase in area with favorable environmental conditions. In temperature regions, plants grow for shorter period due to adverse climatic conditions. Mountains decrease in species diversity takes place from lower to higher altitude. Higher seasonal variations and fall in temperature leads reduction in Biodiversity with 1000 M increase in altitude leads to temperature drop of about 6.5C. It required for maintaining use of goods and services from ecosystems.
