hyundai Kona

Hyundai has just launched the Kona Electric, the first long-range electric SUV in India on July 9. While it is offered in two battery variants internationally, we get only the smaller 39.2kWh battery pack which has a claimed ARAI range of just over 450km on a full charge.

With Hyundai Kona Electric, the South Korean carmaker aims to target eco-friendly car buyers.

The Indian Government is also planning to switch to full-electric cars by 2030. Hyundai is aiming to locally develop this electric SUV at its production plant, though it initially imported as a CKD kit along with a small level of localization.

Hyundai had reported on July 19 that it had received 120 confirmed bookings for the electric SUV in India. (2)

The Electric SUV Price in India

The Indian Govt. GST Council on 27 July’19 – Saturday slashed GST on electric vehicles (EVs) to five per cent from 12 per cent. It also reduced the GST on EV chargers from 18% to five per cent.

The new rates will be effective from 1st August 2019. This was shortly after Hyundai launched the Kona Electric in India at Rs 25.30 lakh.

If all things are considered, the new cut in GST rates could mean that the price of Hyundai’s all-electric SUV could go down by Rs 1.5 lakh. However, no confirmation from the company has been out yet.

The environment-friendly vehicle has been designed to charge about 80% in 57 minutes and can run for 452km.
